Bryant Park lights up with rhythm and heritage on Friday, August 22 at 7 PM, as Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra headline Picnic Performances with a celebration of New York City’s immigrant stories and musical traditions.
Led by 8-time Grammy Award winner Arturo O’Farrill, the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most dynamic and respected big bands in the world. With roots in the pioneering sounds of Tito Puente and Mario Bauzá, and a bold eye toward the future, ALJO delivers a blend of Latin jazz that’s as deep as it is electrifying.
This special performance honors the 400th anniversary of New York City with music that reflects its cultural legacy; drawing on styles across the Latin diaspora, from Afro-Cuban rhythms to modern jazz improvisation. Expect powerful solos, ensemble precision, and the unmistakable energy of a city that’s always in motion.
Presented in collaboration with Belongó, formerly the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, this event is part of Bryant Park’s free Picnic Performances series. The piano is provided by Steinway & Sons, and media support comes from WBGO. The concert will also be livestreamed on Carnegie Hall’s digital platforms
